Romance And The Old West Skillfully Melded In Short Story Collection

If you’re a stickler for historical accuracy, romance in the Old West, and just plain superb writing, Holly Bargo’s short-story collection, Satin Boots: Six Short Romances of the Old West, will more than satisfy your reading needs.

Bargo draws well-developed characters in believable situations, such as the risk-taking woman who finally runs into more trouble than she’d anticipated, a mail order bride whose husband-to-be has changed the rules of the game, and an undertaker who finds himself resurrecting a body he thought he’d be burying.

Set in the American Old West, Bargo’s Satin Boots stories are sweet, clean romances, cleverly infused with history and humor.

Here’s just a taste of these engrossing tales:

• “Angels High:” Making a living winning at a man’s game, Angelica Durant has learned to expect trouble now and then, especially when the stakes are high. But this time, she gets far more than she bargained for when trouble finds her.
• “The Mail Order Bride’s Choice:” Seeking to improve her circumstances, an indigent woman makes a perilous cross-country journey to meet her fiancé, who’s got plans for her ― and they don’t include marriage.
• “Coming Home:” Dessie Humphrey is just trying to hold on to the family farm in the face of seemingly endless hardship. When help arrives in the form of a wanted gunslinger, she’s in no position to refuse.
• “Resurrection:” Undertakers bury the dead; they don’t ordinarily bring them back to life. Antonio DiCarlo does just that when the body of a lovely Swedish immigrant lands on his doorstep.
• “Pride and Peace:” It’s an open secret on the Lazy Five that Jessie North is a woman. That doesn’t stop Daniel Harper from behaving badly when he learns, but when the proud half-breed saves his life, can Daniel overcome deep-seated prejudices?
• “The Rancher’s First Love:” When a gravely wounded Chinese woman collapses on Clint Cheswick’s front porch, he doesn’t expect to be competing with his half-breed foreman for her affection.

Author Holly Bargo works full-time as a freelance writer and editor and lives with her husband on a hobby farm in southwest Ohio. They have two children, both grown. Bargo’s writing includes fantasy and romance, often combined; and since 2014, she has published more than 20 titles, from short stories to novels. In 2019, she and bestselling author Russ Towne published Six Shots Each Gun, a collection of short westerns. While Holly Bargo is a pseudonym, she’d like readers to know that the name was also attached to a very real and temperamental Appaloosa mare.

Fast-Paced Mystery Dishes Up Murder On A Dinner Train

Honey Howell returned to her small, quiet hometown of Bardstown, Kentucky, thrilled by the prospect of working with her grandfather at his legendary bourbon distillery and reconnecting with K.C. Cleary — a master distiller and “the one who got away.”

What she didn’t expect was to discover K.C. with a knife in his chest. Honey’s a marketing whiz, not a sleuth, but that doesn’t curb her determination to bring the murderer to justice. Honey’s digging dredges up more than clues, and soon she realizes that her genteel hometown has dark secrets lurking beneath the surface of their polite society.

Also in the hunt for K.C.’s killer is Texan Sam Gentry, Bardstown’s newest detective. When he meets Honey he falls in love at first sight — with her bloodhound, Elvis. Sam and Elvis are a match made in heaven — both are relentless in their dogged pursuit for a murderer. When Honey finds another dead master distiller on a dinner train, Sam and Elvis work together to sniff out the truth. Sam’s greatest challenge, however, is thwarting amateur sleuth Honey from interfering with his investigation while preventing her from becoming another victim.

With a charming, relatable protagonist, the inviting backdrop of Kentucky Bourbon Country, and an irresistible bloodhound, Murder on the Bluegrass Bourbon Train from popular inspirational romance author Scarlett Dunn marks Dunn’s fantastic first voyage into the cozy mystery genre.

Puzzle-solving readers will enjoy the fast-paced narrative and believable characters as Hon-ey and Sam scout for clues — with a little help from Elvis, of course! With no shortage of po-tential suspects, the twists and turns throughout attempt to throw readers off the track. Who did it and why? Hop aboard to find out!

Before becoming a published author, Scarlett Dunn was an entrepreneur. In addition to writing cozy mysteries, Dunn has published several historical inspirational romance novels. She lives in Kentucky, and as an avid outdoorswoman she enjoys any activity under the sun, where she develops her characters and plots. When not writing, her favorite days are spent with those she loves. She has many hobbies, including making bourbon balls. She would tell you her closely guarded recipe, but then she’d have to throw you off the train!

A Life Packed With Experiences Leads Texas Author To Pen Adroit Supernatural Thriller

Start with one artist experimenting with her craft, add one dead serial killer and a pinch of the supernatural and you’ve cooked up one tense thriller. In A Brush With Death, the first of a series, Jody Summers masterfully blends the supernatural and the romantic to achieve a highly satisfying read.

New Orleans painter Kira McGovern hits on something when she mixes her mother’s ashes into her oil paints and enters an altered state. She begins channeling some key moments in her mother’s life, creating a stunning work of art as a memorial and drawing in customers who want a painting done using the same method. Pleased with her success, she launches Canvas of Life and commissions start rolling in. And when it couldn’t get any better, she meets Sean; a handsome mid-western rancher, who harbors a gruesome secret of which he is unaware.

But with each brushstroke on her latest commission, Kira’s reality is becoming more and more bizarre. She awakens from dreams that are soaked in blood and filled with gruesome images of murders. And the feeling of a lurking malevolence grows ever stronger.

Unconventional is the word to describe the life author Jody Summers led before turning to writing. The adopted son of a prominent Texas restaurateur, Summers grew up in New Orleans, Memphis and Houston, learning the restaurant business while he built a career as a competitive gymnast that propelled him to a scholarship at the University of Kansas. After college, Summers followed in his father’s footsteps, owning, at one point, three 24-hour restaurant franchises along with four tanning salons in Tulsa. He has used his entrepreneurial skills for everything from a patent in the pet industry to a single’s website. A restaurateur, a gymnast, a stunt man, an entrepreneur, a pilot, skydiver, scuba diver and an accomplished martial artist for 25 years, Summers has tried it all. Now he brings all those experiences to paper in his supernatural thriller series, Art of the Dead.

Newsroom Dispute Turns Violent In Yellow, A Journalism Thriller

A principled news director, a ruthless female television manager known as The Barracuda and a corporate manager with a gambling addiction set the stage for a thriller where manipulation of the news for personal gain trumps journalistic integrity.

Yellow, by Jeanne Charters, takes readers into a newsroom of the 1980s at the highest-rated television station in Pennsylvania. Finley Smith is its news director. When she learns from her top reporter that the Pennsylvania Governor has hired a mob-owned construction company to repair a bridge in Pittsburgh, she plans to report it. Her unscrupulous station manager orders her to “leave it alone.” But when a reporter’s probe reveals dangerous truths about the construction company’s shoddy work, Finley opts to buck the system and run the stories. This sets in motion a deadly dispute.

Although Finley’s reputation is irreproachable, making it difficult to fire her, the station manager and corporate president conspire to have her eliminated.

Between the covers of Yellow, Charters expertly weaves a suspenseful web of ambition-fueled deceit, financial desperation and corruption that ultimately culminates in a grisly crime. A veteran of broadcast television, Charters draws from her own experiences to inform the character development and story arc, lending authenticity to every page.

Will Finley Smith emerge with the truth — and her life — intact?

Born in small-town Ohio, author Jeanne Charters is a veteran of the broadcast television industry. The former Vice President of Marketing for Viacom TV began her career in radio and TV marketing, where she proved to be an expert at writing and producing effective television campaigns. Her talents caught the eye of Viacom Television, and when they approached her with the position of Vice President of Marketing, she jumped at the opportunity. She would later open her own broadcast ad agency, Charters Marketing. For years, she traveled to television stations from New York to Hawaii, producing and placing television and radio campaigns for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. At the same time, Charters worked with select local retailers on their campaigns.

Charters grew up believing she’d be a stay-at-home mom and live in her hometown for the rest of her life, but life threw her curveballs. When her first husband took a job in Chicago, Charters experienced culture shock of the highest order. After four children and a divorce, Charters ended up in Albany, New York, where she met and married Matt Restivo, her husband of 35 years and counting. When it came time to retire, Jeanne and Matt moved to Asheville, NC, and she began writing in earnest: columns for magazines and newspapers and finally, novels.

Clues Surrounding Six-Day-War Ambush Start To Surface In
Blood In The Water

On June 8, 1967, the USS Liberty, an unarmed intelligence ship reporting to the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the auspices of the National Security Agency, was ambushed by unmarked jet planes. Rockets and machine gun fire erupted, napalm hit the deck, and a torpedo blew a 40-foot hole in the starboard side of the vessel. Lacking any means of defense, the sailors were powerless. In the end, 34 American sailors and translators lost their lives and another 174 were wounded — many for life. Israel confessed to the attack but called it an “accident” and a “mistake.”

Blood in the Water: How the US and Israel Conspired to Ambush the USS Liberty by investigative writer Joan Mellen presents evidence suggesting complicity between US and Israeli intelligence in the attack on Liberty and the more than 50-year-long cover-up.

Using interviews with more than 40 survivors, knowledgeable political insiders and even some CIA officers who refused to be complicit in the cover-up, along with Soviet archives of the period, Mellen details the intensity and horror of the sustained attack and the “deliberate targeting of Liberty’s antennae and satellite dish, undermining any credibility that Israel’s aggression was not intentional.”

Through exhaustive research, Mellen aims to unearth answers to questions that have lingered for more than 50 years: What were the underlying motives for the attack? Was this a false flag operation conducted in the midst of the Six-Day War? Is it conceivable that Israel initiated the operation without a green light from the US?

For the sake of justice, truth and the murdered and surviving sailors, Blood in the Water is a must-read that shares compelling evidence of a horrifying truth.

Joan Mellen is the bestselling author of 24 books, including A Farewell to Justice, her biographical study of Jim Garrison’s New Orleans investigation into the Kennedy assassination. She has written for a variety of publications, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Baltimore Sun. Mellen was a professor of English and creative writing at Temple University in Philadelphia before retiring in 2018 after 50 years. She lives in Pennington, New Jersey.

Apocalypse Survivors Groomed For Life At The Edge Of The Solar System

For those who’ve ever tried to imagine a post-apocalyptic Earth, Dr. Donald Hricik has come up with some interesting scenarios of his own in Our Great Escape; Part 1: Dumbers. The year is 2360. Survivors are being groomed for a new life on one of Jupiter’s moons after having been kept alive for centuries on mind-altering drugs.

Here’s the twist. The man picked to head the exodus to the edge of the solar system, a doctor, discovers that these survivors are losing their memories and emotions and even dying in large numbers — the results of a flaw in the drug’s design. The author grapples with larger themes of surviving a man-made planetary catastrophe as well as whether or not life is even worth it if it must be lived on mind-altering drugs that come at great cost. First in a two-part series, Dr. Hricik admits he wrote Our Great Escape while undergoing seismic shifts in his own life.

“I wrote it while I was dealing with my wife’s illness and death from severe dementia,” said Dr. Hricik. “That’s why you see themes of memory loss, dementia and death percolating throughout.”

Born in Ohio, Dr. Hricik is currently Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and served as the Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension at University Hospital’s Cleveland Medical Center from 1993 to 2017. His research interests have focused on complications of immunosuppression and immune monitoring of kidney transplant recipients. He has published more than 180 articles and books, and 35 book chapters. When he’s not writing, he enjoys painting and fishing.

Testimonial for Ascot Media Group from author, Steve Alten

What a wonderful testimonial we received from N.Y. Times Bestselling author, Steve Alten. Had to share. Thank you Steve!

TO: Ascot Media Group

FROM: Steve Alten, NY Times best-selling author of The MEG — the book that became a block-buster movie in 2018 starring Jason Statham.

Ascot’s untiring efforts to get publicity for the book provided great national coverage here in the USA and overseas.

Ascot is way beyond a public relations firm…. They’re a relentless team that not only accompanied me on my journey—but made absolutely sure I crossed the finish line!

I have worked with the Ascot team on and off for at least 12 years now, using them to promote several of my books (see www.stevealten.com). I’ve tried other PR firms with big promises between times, but always returned to Ascot—realizing that they are, without a doubt, the best PR firm out there. Hands down, they are the real-deal!

Don’t hesitate using them. They have a great reputation worldwide with authors, publishers and the media.

Steve Alten, Ed.D.
