CAREGIVING Hope And Health For Caregiving Families

After a life-threatening accident stopped her completely in her tracks a few years ago, author Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse and her family came to truly understand that we are all one event from a lifestyle change.

Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter clearly illustrated the importance of this when she said: “There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers; those who currently are caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.” Hence, the new book by Cruse with Patrick Egan has arrived, Caregiving: Hope and Health for Caregiving Families (ISBN: 9780757321931 – May 2019 — $14.95). While some people choose to take care of loved ones after they can no longer take care of themselves, many others must do so for a myriad of other reasons, often financial. It can be a crisis situation, such as an accident, or the long-term effects of aging. In any case, the days are often long and draining—both for the family care-giver and the paid professional—and the choices to be made are often confusing, difficult, and daunting.

Filled with practical, easily implementable advice, this illuminating book helps readers sort through the puzzle that forms the caregiving world. Topics include: identifying the roles of caregivers; dealing with burnout; finding ways to compartmentalize and separate without guilt; using technology to make life easier; building bridges through teamwork; downsizing; and navigating end-of-life issues. The first book to provide stories from the perspective of both caregiver and caree, it enables caregivers to better understand their fears and feelings. The result is a positive, unified approach to care.

Sharon has traveled the world and developed programs in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Canada, and has appeared on The Phil Donahue Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Larry King Show, as well as in multiple media events.

Patrick Egan is a caregiving “gentrepreneur” and the caregiver for his parents who live in a senior community nearby. He is the founder of NurturingNet, a company that helps others use technology in a way that enhances and adds fun to the caregiver experience. Pursuit Of Permanent Happiness Must Start From Within

“Happiness is good, but is not enough. Peace is good, and is enough,” posits Dr. Iyabo Oji-kutu, author of Permanent Happiness: The only way to find peace, joy and your life-given purpose. Being happy is typically a temporary state, she says, because we tie it to external influences. But permanent, authentic happiness is achievable if we learn how to cultivate inner peace.

“We do, of course, find happiness at different points and phases in our lives. The problem is, this situational happiness tends to be short-lived. We are happy for a few days and then fall back into anxiety, sadness and/or worry,” Dr. Iyabo explains.

Permanent Happiness is a practical guide that reads like a conversation with a close friend. Peppered with relatable anecdotes from Iyabo’s own experiences — including her divorce, workplace stress and reentering the dating scene — the lessons between the covers reso-nate with three-dimensional quality.

Dr. Iyabo outlines three key principles of pursuing permanent happiness through finding lasting, internal peace. First is consciously choosing to change our character. Second, we must continuously nourish our spiritual and physical lifelines. Third, we must use our gifts to elevate and inspire those around us as well as ourselves. Individual chapters explore the roles that relationships, spiritual lives and physical lives play in this quest for balance and sustainable happiness.

At its core, enduring happiness is about striking a balance between physical lives and spiritual lives and understanding that when one goes off course the other must follow. Permanent Happiness aims to inspire readers to achieve this balance for a more fulfilling future.

Dr. Iyabo Ojikutu is a board certified pediatrician, fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She received her medical degree at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria. She has been practicing medicine for 25 years and currently has her own practice in Atlanta where she lives with her two daughters. She has been teaching and mentoring medical students for 13 years and serves a disadvantaged community in Georgia. Dr. Iyabo also writes The Peace Place Blog, which can be found on her website, www.driyabo.com. Angel Faces® — You Will Never Forget Their Courageous Stories

We live in a society of selfies and status postings; how you look can dramatically affect your self-esteem more than ever before. But add to that being mauled by a raccoon, or left for dead in a horrific house fire, and it can be a living hell. The physical and emotional scars can be unbearable when you are faced with the cruelty of the world. But there’s hope…

Burn survivor Lesia Cartelli is sharing her experience and helping girls navigate the permanent disfigurement left from traumatic injuries. The stares, unwanted questions and rejection are the reality this special group of survivors deals with on a daily basis.
Lesia knows this is true because she lived through it herself. Her desire to heal from a natural gas explosion at age nine that left her seriously burned over 50% of her face and body, encouraged her to create Angel Faces® for girls and women who suffer disfigurements from traumatic injuries. This year, two retreats will be held concurrently in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, on June 16 – 23, 2019.

Over thirty adolescent and young women (ages 13-26) with disfiguring traumas will come together on a private compound on Lake Winnipesaukee to heal. They come from Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma Texas, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada, and their stories will tug at the hearts of your audience.

During the multi-day retreats, survivors hear first-hand from Cartelli about her injuries and methods she used to recover. Through role-playing, the girls learn strategies on how to handle staring, teasing and intrusive questions, and during daily yoga, art therapy, lake play and intensive sessions, the participants begin to let their social armor down. The truth of the effect of their trauma is exposed so they can begin to heal. Licensed psychologists and clinical cosmetic professionals are also on hand to lead groups.

“Our retreats are only the first component to healing,” Cartelli explains. “Seeing our participants realize they are not the ‘burned or disfigured girl;’ they are a daughter, sister, a good soccer player, etc., first. Their trauma is an experience (a reservoir within themselves they can now access for courage), but it’s not who they are. I hear from their families or medical centers that referred them that after they return home with the tools they learned at the retreat, they are much more confident and self-assured in the real world—ending their social death. Now that gets me excited!”

Her own experiences on the long road to healing inspired Lesia to write a book as a way of helping others in their journey. Heart of Fire demonstrates how to discover blessings and gifts within any challenge, and the importance of opening our hearts to deeply heal what blocks our life’s pathway. In her book, Lesia also teaches the power of embracing our fears—something she did herself at age thirty-three when she faced her fear of fire and suited up in full firefighting gear to enter a burning building known as a “control burn.” A beautiful side note to the story is that after she conquered her fear, she married the fire captain who actually led her into the fire.

Angel Faces®, founded in 2003, is a non-profit organization headquartered in Encinitas, CA, whose mission is to provide healing retreats and ongoing support for adolescent girls and young women with severe and permanent disfigurement from burn/trauma injuries so they may achieve their optimum potential and develop meaningful relationships for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Words For All: Insightful Writings That Can Help Anyone Learn What Life Is Really All About

Dr. Pieter Noomen’s personal spiritual path widened, unexpectedly and quite sensationally, about 25 years ago at a time when he was unhappy with the way his life was going, especially certain events in his personal life, and he was getting older. At that time he became familiar with the insights of Dr. Peter D. Francuch, who communicated with what he called ‘the Positive State.’ Noomen read about, and met, others who experienced a direct, personal connection with the ‘One Who Is Life’ — and that is when his own life changed significantly. He shares his experiences and offers access to the Source of that information in his writings on the website at www.wordsforall.org.

Noomen posits that directly or indirectly, life stems from one common source and that to connect with that source is the highest level of existence we can achieve on earth.

Over the course of many years, Noomen experienced transformative “visits” on the spirit level — and he freely shares the universal and eternal facts of life that were com-municated to him on his website, www.wordsforall.org.

As he explains on his website, “I can only say that the information came from a pres-ence on my innermost spiritual level I was in communication with for some time. The words seem the result of my spirit merging with the spirit of life It/Her/Himself.”

Visitors to Noomen’s website can read about the 12 components of life through his 12 booklets: Oneness, Love, Life, Fire, Space, Connectedness, Progression, Effect, Free-dom, Joy, Differentness and Harmony. Throughout his writings, Noomen avoids using the name of any deity, such as God, and instead uses what he refers to as The Seven Names, each of which relates on a human level to the situation at hand: One Holy, Love, Truth, Proper, Healing, Manifestation and Energy.

A series of lessons on the site shares 147 thought-provoking questions and the illumi-nating answers that came to him during his extensive communications with the All Spir-it.

“In death,” Noomen writes, “everyone will, without exception and in a purely personal way, find out whether or not there is another dimension of existence.” The reflections shared on Noomen’s website invite readers to not wait until the end of their earthly lives for the answer.

Born in the Netherlands, Pieter Noomen completed doctoral studies in theology and pastoral psychology at the Free University of Amsterdam and was senior minister of three protestant churches. Later he worked as a psychotherapist and as a staff mem-ber of a Los Angeles metropolitan church. He was involved in mental health issues like suicide prevention and hospice. His personal spiritual path widened quite sensationally 25 years ago when he was drawn to the insights of Dr. Peter D. Francuch (1934-2001), who wrote about his communications with what he called the Positive State. This led to Noomen’s interest in experiencing a direct, personal connection with the One Who is Life. Noomen is retired and resides in Hollywood, California.

Wanderer Shares Psychedelic Journey Along Fabled Hippie Trail

During the chaotic latter days of the Vietnam War, after the protest march on Washington, D.C., many American youth asserted their rebellious free-dom by doing drugs, having sex, sleeping outside and backpacking through Europe, North Africa and Asia. Still living at home was Steve, a young man coming of age, just out of col-lege, with no clear future and unable to pay rent. Envious of the free-spirited revelers, Steve, who adopted the nickname “Woodstock” after attending the music festival in New York, joined the throngs of intrepid youth to wander the world and search for his soul.

Wanderer – The Ultimate Hippy Trail Journey by F.T. Burke and Steve Reifman, follows Woodstock’s year-long journey to scratch his nomadic itch. Upon beating the draft, Wood-stock crosses the Atlantic to the Old World, without any particular itinerary, no set time to re-turn home and not much money. He finds God everywhere no matter how hard he tries to hide and look away. His spontaneous, free-wheeling adventures of raucous, hilarious inci-dents all weigh heavy against the need to come home and grow up.

Wanderer will appeal to the wanderlust in the souls of hippies young and old. A fast read with a lot of laughs, the story was inspired by the true adventures of the co-author. Come along for this unforgettable adventure of a lifetime.

Author F.T. Burke is a lifelong resident of the state of Michigan, with his wife, Lorie. He en-joyed a prior career in the high-tech sector, serving as a systems engineer and project man-ager. Burke’s debut novel, The Bohemian Adventure, traces the journey of one who meets up with devoted deadheads who followed the psychedelic rock group, the Grateful Dead. He is currently developing two more books to be published in 2019.

Steven W. Reifman is a practicing lawyer and businessman. He took a journey similar in time and place to that of Wanderer’s main character, Woodstock. Steve was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and has three children, two grandchildren and an enduring, love-filled mar-riage of over forty years.

Doctor Emerges From Losing Wife To Dementia To Share Compelling Story

Those who have emerged from the experience of caring for and losing a spouse or parent to dementia understand well how difficult the journey is. But for those whose loved one has just been diagnosed, Dr. Donald Hricik’s Lynne’s Last Christmas: A Battle With Dementia may be a helpful companion to have for the difficult journey ahead.

Lynne Hricik was diagnosed with the disease at age 64, and shortly after her death, Dr. Hricik penned Lynne’s Last Christmas within a few weeks as both a way of dealing with his and his family’s grief and to provide information about the disease and about caring for someone with dementia.

“I truly hope this book will provide some comfort to the many others who are caring for someone with this awful thing called dementia. You are not alone,” says Dr. Hricik.

In Lynne’s Last Christmas, Dr. Hricik recalls the last four years of his wife’s life during which she suffered memory loss and frequent falls. He also discusses the impact of her illness upon his children and close friends, and actually debated whether to have his children read the manuscript before it was published. All agreed that they should. “They cried when they read the final draft, but in sharing their thoughts, it brought back memories—both the good times and the bad times—we’d had during Lynne’s life,” he said.

The author also goes into detail about the condition itself. Dementia, he explains, isn’t a specific disease but rather a term that captures the group of symptoms associated with a decline in memory or other thinking skills. Though sometimes confused with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia is the overall group of which Alzheimer’s makes up 60-80 percent of cases.

Dr. Hricik is currently Alzheimer’s disease at Case Western Reserve University and served as the Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension at University Hospital’s Cleveland Medical Center from 1993 to 2017. His research interests have focused on complications of immunosuppression and immune monitoring of kidney transplant recipients. He has published more than 180 articles and books, and 35 book chapters.

Royalties from the book are being donated to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and to the University Hospitals of Cleveland Hospice Service.
