Inside The Mind of a Teen Killer by Author Phil Chalmers

Ten years after the unthinkable – Are kids any safer since the Columbine High School Massacre?
Author Phil Chalmers offers a unique, often disturbing glimpse into the mind of a teen killer

On April 20, 1999 in the small suburban town of Littleton, Colorado, two high-school seniors, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, enacted an all-out assault on Columbine High School. The boys’ plan was to kill hundreds of their peers. Armed with guns, knives, and a multitude of bombs, the two boys walked the hallways and killed.  When the day was done, twelve students, one teacher, and the two boys were dead.  The obvious question in the aftermath was why?

In Inside The Mind of a Teen Killer (Thomas Nelson, April 2009), author Phil Chalmers reveals 15 years of research, exhaustive interviews, and face-to-face conversations with the young men who carried out some of the most heinous crimes.

Chalmers says that the two Columbine killers displayed several warning signs that were missed by those around them, and were motivated by at least five of the ten causes of teen murder detailed inside the pages of Inside The Mind of a Teen Killer

“After seeing the rash of teen murders in the 1980’s and the string of school shootings in the 1990’s, I felt I could no longer sit back and watch.  And the so called “experts” didn’t seem to have any answers either, so I went directly to the killers and shooters themselves, and obtained facts and motivations that only could be obtained by speaking with the perpetrators,” said Chalmers.

Luke Woodham was once a lovable child.  Like many other boys, he grew into a socially awkward teen often targeted by bullies.  On October 1, 1997, his life took a tragic turn when he killed his mother in their home, and then drove to his high school and shot nine people, two fatally.  How did this happen?  What sends kids like this careening over the edge?  How can a seemingly typical teen turn into a homicidal maniac?  Inside The Mind of a Teen Killer provides some fascinating insight for parents, teachers, police officers, anyone who cares about the safety of our children including:

  • Conversations with the killers themselves
  • The top ten causes of teen murder
  • How to recognize the warning signs to prevent future violence
  • A game plan to keep our schools and communities safe
  • The ten mistakes parents make that unknowingly contribute to teen violence

RACISM IN AMERICA: THE TWISTED LEGAL HISTORY

New Book from Judge Andrew P. Napolitano is NOT Your Grandfather’s History Book

Barack Obama’s rise to power and overwhelming popularity may help America take an advanced step away from the kind of institutional racism that is, at least in part, the root of many problems currently facing African-Americans.

Still, it would be naïve to think that poverty, joblessness, crime, drug addiction, and disproportionate incarceration rates will somehow vanish because the first black president occupies the Oval Office.

What is needed is a fundamental understanding of how we got here.

In Dred Scott’s Revenge: A Legal History of Race and Freedom In America (Thomas Nelson, April 14, 2009) Judge Andrew Napolitano provides a no-holds-barred look at the role of the government in the denial of freedoms based on race.

“The real culprit throughout our racial history has been the government,” writes Napolitano.  “At every level, at virtually every turn, in every generation, the government selectively chose to enact and enforce laws and inevitably condoned and protected the most horrific abuse imaginable to blacks, and to some of the whites who protested.”

Readers of Dred Scott’s Revenge will learn:

  • about the seeds of American slavery
  • how the country’s framers failed to adhere to the principles the nation was founded upon
  • how appointed judges enforced two sets of laws (fair treatment for whites, unfair treatment for blacks)
  • the difference between Natural Law and Positivism and how the latter gives power to the majority and heaven help the minority
  • the origins of Jim Crow Laws of segregation and rules (for blacks only) in the U.S. military
  • the truth about the ugly Tuskegee Experiment
  • how both parties have used racial rhetoric to get elected
  • how government silence spoke volumes as the nation’s pastime was integrating

Dred Scott’s Revenge includes stories that some writers have hoped readers would not learn; of people demeaned worse than cattle, denied basic free will, crushed or impeded by the government even up to today.  Further, Napolitano argues that although the government’s only legitimate function is to protect freedom, time and time again it strays well outside the Constitution, ultimately putting our very freedoms at risk.

About the Author

Judge Andrew P. Napolitano graduated from Princeton University and the University of Notre Dame Law School.  He is the youngest life-tenured Superior Court judge in the history of the State of New Jersey.  He has tried over 150 jury trials and has sat in all parts of the Superior Court.  For eleven years, he was Adjunct Professor of Law at Seton Hall Law School where he was voted most outstanding professor in three academic years.  Judge Napolitano returned to private practice in 1995 and has been the Senior Judicial Analyst for Fox News since 1998 and co-hosts “Brian and the Judge” on Fox radio.  Judge Napolitano also lectures nationally, and has been published in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun, and many more.  He is the author of Constitutional Chaos: What Happens When the Government Breaks Its Own Laws, the New York Times bestseller The Constitution in Exile: How the Federal Government Has Seized Power by Rewriting the Supreme Law of the Land, and A Nation of Sheep.

Endorsements:

“Dred Scott’s Revenge makes it impossible for the self-anointed ‘experts’ on race relations to ever accuse the country of being too afraid to have a national discussion on race. Judge Napolitano lays out 150 years of our national experience . . . and places the blame for much of what’s wrong squarely at the feet of those responsible: the federal government and politicians whose plans, policies, and programs trashed the Constitution. Compelling and timely reading written for the layman, not lawyers!”
–Glenn Beck, Nationally syndicated radio talk show host; Host, The Glenn Beck Program, Fox News Channel

“The Attorney General ignited a firestorm by suggesting that ours was a nation of ‘cowards’ when it comes to conversations about race. Judge Andrew Napolitano is no coward. His brave and incisive book takes the calamitous, contemptuous Dred Scott decision, which held slaves to be “non-persons,” as its starting point. In this sharply written narrative, the Judge shows us how race remains the driving force in almost every aspect of American life, from education to law enforcement. Dred Scott, the person, would have appreciated this graphic and honest appraisal.”

–Geraldo Rivera, Fox News Channel

“The best history of the law and race I’ve ever read . . . Judge Napolitano has written a challenge to anyone who thinks they understand the roots of America’s tangled race relations.”

— Juan Williams, National Public Radio

Author drank cobra venom to explore the hereafter

The foundation for happiness is inner peace, and inner peace is food that feeds the soul to make us feel secure and at ease with the world. Inner peace is achieved by expanding our awareness and consciousness enough to grasp the oneness of everything, according to authors Jamshid Hosseini and Dave Cunningham in Travel Within: The 7 Steps to Wisdom and Inner Peace (O-Books, John Hunt Publishing, Ltd.).

The original concept of the book came from Jamshid Hosseini, who encountered a near-death experience by voluntarily drinking a concoction of tea and milk laced with cobra venom that produced searing pain throughout his body.  He literally died for several minutes and then recovered.  During the time he was dead, what he experienced was so remarkable and moving, it inspired him to write the Seven Steps to Wisdom and Inner Peace.  The book is a virtual recipe for peace that the authors hope will spread throughout the world, one person at a time, and perhaps even lead a trend toward universal peace.  Travel Within is born of a mystical, near-death vision and supported by research in the fields of science, religion and philosophy.

Everything we see in the world around us is the way we want to see it – not the way it really is.  It’s no wonder the human race finds it difficult to experience inner peace, with approximately 110 wars being fought around the world right now, and almost one-third of them are major armed conflicts involving many deaths.  At least 11 nations possess nuclear weapons, and more than 30,000 warheads are pointed in directions all over the planet right now.

Travel Within: The 7 Steps to Wisdom and Inner Peace (O-Books, John Hunt Publishing, Ltd.), is a spiritual self-help book written to appeal to dreamers and doubters alike.  The goal of the authors, Jamshid Hosseini and Dave Cunningham, is to elevate human consciousness enough that we may avoid the catastrophic disaster ahead of us that has been predicted by scientists, politicians and most major religions.

Jamshid “Jim” Hosseini has been rich and poor, Persian and American, Hindu and Buddhist, alive and dead.  During his worldwide journey, he lived on a hill overlooking a king’s palace in Iran and was beaten by Muslims for practicing the Baha’i Faith, begged for food in India, and labored for a monk in Katmandu.  He took counsel from the famous Rajneesh in Pune and built his own successful business in California. Dave Cunningham was the ghost writer of Travel Within and is author and/or editor of seven non-fiction books and novels, including his inspirational novel, Messages; he is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in magazines and newspapers worldwide.

Suzanne Forster, NY Times best-selling author of The Private Concierge, calls this novel: “An important book.  Travel Within may be one of the most compelling journeys you will ever take.”

Joel Engel, author of The Myth and the Man Behind Star Trek, says: “Utterly fascinating and, by the way, beautifully written.”

Kathleen Sage, Attorney at Law, says: “A spiritual guide for people from all walks of life.”

Recognizing shortcomings of philosophers helps discover what life is really all about.

Culture, beliefs and explanations absorbed during childhood form the preconceived notions of truth we carry with us on our life’s journey.   However, understanding life requires letting go of misleading ideas that only mask life’s real flow.  There are beliefs and understandings that have formed each and every one of our own views but these are merely mental creations to the conscious – they do not clarify, but rather distort, how reality works.

The Essence of Reality: A Clear Awareness of How Life Works (O-Books/John Hunt Publishing) exposes the inner cause and effect of real events; how each individual creates his or her own patterns in health, success, and relationships in life, often opposing fulfillment.  This insightful book gives the reader the necessary tools to look inward through meditation, dream analysis, and self-hypnosis – all with the intent to draw vital information from the subconscious to regain power over life’s quality.

The Essence of Reality, by Thomas Daniel Nehrer, is a unique compilation of the author’s own experiences studying many great visionaries and philosophers from the Greeks into modern times, and objectively seeing their limitations vs. how life actually works.  Nehrer has traveled over 24,000 miles to make seventy appearances across the United States, Canada, Britain and the Netherlands, and applies the revenue from sales of his books toward expenses in order to be able to present his perspective.  People want to hear what he has to say – they want to open their minds and learn not to fear introspection.

Nehrer has never been one to take things at face value – he left a career in chemical engineering to travel widely and explore at a young age.  He experienced many techniques along the way that prompted his inner journey to question superficiality of beliefs in a determined effort to find underlying inner elements to outer problems.  It is well worth a visit to his website at www.nehrer.net, to learn from his talks and books how his low key approach to mind expansion helps open-minded seekers.

Mystical Hawaii – Obviously Not Just Another Day in Paradise

‘We’re in trouble. We need your help.’ A cryptic plea tucked into a Honolulu party invitation puzzles Hawaiian P.I. John Spyer.  The note is from Hillary Haverhill, a woman he’s never met.  She’s the new bride of Randy, John’s friend from childhood.  Dr. Randolph Haverhill is now an economist of international renown.  If Randy is in trouble, why didn’t he write the note himself?  Suppose Randy’s second wife has figured out that her new husband is a world-class womanizer?  If Hillary wants to enlist his services in a marital dispute, Spyer is not up for that.  John’s not eager to spend time in Honolulu, either.  This playful tropical city is also haunted, as any Hawaiian knows, and John ‘Oluhana Maalaea Spyer happens to be one haunted man.  Too bad Spyer is only half Hawaiian and so pays only half attention when mercurial fire goddess Madam Pele warns him to stay off the Randolph Haverhill case.  No decent Hawaiian ever says no to an old friend, however.

Despite Madam P’s  warning, Spyer investigates the death of his childhood pal Randy Haverhill, which takes him home to Honolulu’s ancient Nuuanu Valley, opening  his own psychic wounds in the process and putting to the test his love for Maya, his girl friend from the mainland.  Spyer is soon privy to a frightening tale of obsessive love.  Randy Haverhill was charisma on steroids, way too popular with the ladies for his own good.  Though Hillary and Randy’s ex-wife Eva detest each other, they agree on one thing: Randy was stalked and shot to death by one of his crazed lovers.  So why is it that the police persist in the notion that Haverhill was murdered by his own son?

One Big Itch (Arche Books), is the latest exciting thriller from Sara Williams; an author who has already demonstrated a distinct knack for writing breathtaking page-turners.  She will not disappoint her readers in her latest character-driven novel with its hair-raising twists and turns.  When the police uncover new evidence at the mansion and Spyer discovers an erotic manuscript on Randy’s laptop, there follows a cat and mouse game of chase with some undesirable characters involved in an erotic book club.  The excitement builds when events take on new and unexpected twists, leaving the reader anxious to keep turning the pages of this brilliant “whodunit” – all the way to its suspense-filled climax.

Sara Williams and her husband lived in Hawaii for ten years, lending authenticity to her book through her own experience of this magical paradise.  Her first novel, The Don Juan Con, was optioned in Hollywood by producer Robert Evans for Paramount Studios.  Her second novel, The Serenoa Scandal, was the prequel to her latest novel, One Big Itch

TIP SHEET:

Diana Donlon, Publisher of Women’s Outlook says, “..Williams crafts another riveting page-turner not to be missed.  One Big Itch weaves fascinating Hawaiian culture with twists and turns spurred by obsessive love, a murder, and a John Spyer investigation.”

Prudy Taylor Board of Boca Raton News states: “The Big Itch is a page turner of a murder mystery….Spyer is an intriguing, fully-fleshed character.  The well-crafted plot races toward a suspense-filled climax.  The setting is the still beautiful Hawaii of haves and have nots that tourists seldom, if ever, see.  A splendid read!”

One Big Itch is introduced in an innovative “zine” format that travels and packs well and while the story is fiction, the locations are real.  A reader or visitor to Honolulu can follow the story on maps included in the book and even learn to speak a little Hawaiian or pidgin with the aid of the glossary in the back of the book.

The Living will Envy the Dead in the Next Day of Infamy

Imagine waking up on what you think will be a normal day except when you turn on the TV or radio to catch the news – nothing.  You get ready for work only to find that your car will not start.  You grab your cell phone – nothing…..not a single electronic in your house works.  After checking with a neighbor you find the same scenario.  This is starting to feel very uncomfortable …neighbors gather in the street feeling frightened and confused.  What has just happened, only nobody realizes it yet, is that one of our enemies has detonated a nuclear bomb two hundred miles up, directly over America, and while it doesn’t hurt the people …yet… it emits gamma and x-rays that create an electrical disturbance known as EMP or Electro Magnetic Pulse that strikes wires, metal, antennas, power lines – anything electronic will be destroyed in its powerful path.  In one second, the entire power grid, communications network and transportation system of the United States will come to a grinding halt.

One Second After (TOR/Forge Books), while written as fiction, is based on cold, solid facts.  This is the story of what might transpire in the year after an EMP attack – an attack (according to one Congressional study) that could leave upwards of ninety percent of the American population dead from disease, starvation and civil break down.  Dr. William R. Forstchen is the masterful author of One Second After.  Devoting years of research to this topic, and drawing data from Congressional and Pentagon studies resulted in his book being cited before the House Armed Services Committee as a grim but realistic look at the outcome after an attack by EMP weapons.

One Second After is the story of Professor John Matherson; ex-military; single parent of two young daughters and a history professor at a small college in the mountains of western North Carolina when the attack occurs.  With his military background, he knows immediately what has happened while his neighbors believe it is just another power failure.  In the days to come, grim reality sets in as refugees from nearby cities flock to the country.  There is still no form of communication; pharmacies, hospitals and nursing homes run out of supplies; supermarket shelves are bare, and law and order heads towards complete collapse as thousands die and survivors scramble to stay alive.  When members of his small town band together under his leadership they are not sure how long they can hold out without supplies or against the armed gangs who are pouring out of ravaged cities, ready to loot and kill all in their path.  With only a few short months of insulin left for his youngest daughter – for John and his family it becomes a descent into hell!

Dr. Forstchen, author of several NY Times best-sellers, was inspired to write this book after conversations with long-time friend and former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, who later introduced him to Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R.,MD), head of the Congressional Investigative Committee on EMP and whose 2004 report declared an EMP attack presented the single biggest threat to America.  Before the House Armed Services Committee, the Congressman endorsed Fortstchen’s book in hopes that its searing, emotional story will arouse the American public to action before time runs out.

As an editor with Aviation Week and Space Technology declared “it is not a question of if…it is only a question of when.”  Check out this brilliant author and his action-packed thriller at www.onesecondafter.com.

TIP SHEET:

Stephen Coonts, author of The Assassin, says about the book: “Civilization slides into the abyss of a new dark age in his horrifying apocalyptic novel.  Forstchen has put Bin Laden’s wet dream on paper and, in the process, taken civilization straight to the rack.”

Joel Rosenberg, author of The Sleeping Dragon, says: “Forstchen’s work has flair and power.”

David Hagberg, author of Dance with the Dragon, sums it up with: “Good storytelling consists very simply of creating characters so believable that the reader forms a deep bond.  Forstchen did such a damned fine job with One Second After that shortly after the first page, I had been reeled in
hook, line and sinker.”

Whitney Scott (Booklist) writes: “In a Norman Rockwell town in North Carolina ….ex-servicemen recall “Korea in ‘51” as military action by unlikely people becomes the norm in Forstchen’s sad, riveting, cautionary tale; the premise of which Newt Gingrich’s foreword says is completely possible.”

W.E.B. Griffin and Wm. E. Butterworth, IV add: “The only thing more terrifying than this masterfully crafted story is the possibility of it actually happening – and not a damn thing being done to protect us.”
