Asperger’s and Unstoppable: Matthew Kenslow Doesn’t Let Labels Limit Him

Asperger’s and Unstoppable: Matthew Kenslow Doesn’t Let Labels Limit Him

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet or used by any means of social media sharing.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Matthew Kenslow is a pianist, juggler, motivational speaker and college graduate who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome (part of the autism spectrum) when he was 6 years old. In his thought-provoking book, Juggling the Issues: Living With Asperger’s Syndrome, Kenslow takes readers inside what it’s truly like for someone living with the disability.

“My main message that I tell hundreds of people is that I have not given up on my goals,” he wrote in the book’s preface. “I persevere on my aspirations. If I can do that, certainly everybody else can too.”

Told through a series of stories about his personal experiences, Kenslow sheds light on common traits found in those with Asperger’s, such as the way their minds work, their lack of social and conversational skills, and poor eye contact with others, and how those challenges have impacted his everyday life. Simple tasks take longer for Kenslow — like reading or organizing his thoughts — while remembering things like the Periodic Table or the books of the Bible come more easily.

“We find patterns in things, and that is the key,” he wrote. “… what is difficult for me can be a piece of cake for most others, but what is challenging for most others can be two-plus-two for me.”

Juggling the Issues: Living With Asperger’s Syndrome is an important read for anyone whose life has been touched by Asperger’s Syndrome. Kenslow’s insights aim to lend understanding, provide inspiration, and encourage readers to put aside differences and embrace the gifts that others have to share with the world.

About the Author

Matthew Kenslow has grown up with a form of autism known as Asperger’s Syndrome. Life has been an adventure as he pieced together all of his surroundings amid both praises and taunts. His mission is to teach others from a firsthand perspective about how autistic people interpret things differently from the rest of the world. He believes God has blessed him with the gifts to juggle, play piano and recall facts about the American presidents, geography, science and mathematics. He juggles at elementary schools and encourages the students to never give up on their passions.

He has earned the Gold Medal of Achievement (which is equivalent to the rank of Eagle Scout) through Royal Rangers, a program he has been in since he was 5. Now, he is giving back to children and teenagers, teaching and mentoring them in a wide set of skills and knowledge. He graduated from Orange Coast College with an Associate of Science degree in Chemistry and with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Vanguard University of Southern California. He aspires to be a middle school math and science teacher. Currently, he is a student teacher for Enhanced Mathematics at his former middle school, Ensign Intermediate School, seeking to be done by December 2022, and is an employed substitute teacher for NMUSD.

Teen Heroes Show That By Working Together They
Become More Than Their Disabilities

Philip Sallinger was 12 years old when his father had “the talk” with him, and it was the single greatest moment of his life. What Philip thought was going to be a cringe-worthy discussion about the birds and the bees turned out to be the revelation that not only were superheroes real, but that Philip was the latest in a long line of “custodians” — those who use their superpowers to protect others.

Philip was used to dealing with his blindness—he’d been blind from birth, but he wasn’t prepared to hear that he’s also telekinetic. He had a superpower? Really? Thrilled by the prospect of attending a special high school for emerging superheroes, Phillip’s enthusiasm is dashed when he gets placed in a “special ed” class for disabled empowered kids.

Now Philip and his fellow outsiders, who call themselves The Ables, must overcome more than villains. Bullied, threatened, and betrayed, these underestimated kids must find ways to maximize their powers to overcome their disabilities and fight together as the ultimate enemy is poised to strike.

The Ables is a fast-paced, entertaining debut novel from Jeremy Scott, a bold new voice in fantasy and sci-fi, and already a widely popular storyteller as co-creator and narrator of CinemaSins, a YouTube channel that has amassed more than 8 million subscribers. A former online marketing consultant, Scott spends his time writing, being sarcastic and generally hoping to find a good laugh once a day. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Ables readers who upload a proof of purchase at theablesbook.com will receive bonus content plus access to a 30-page digital comic book written by Jeremy Scott with art by renowned storyboard artist Jeremy Simser, who worked on Deadpool 2. Plus, they’ll be entered to win one of three virtual meet-and-greets with Jeremy Scott and one of 10 personalized, signed copies of The Ables.

The Aging Brain: A Road Map for Keeping A Sharp Mind Into Old Age

Chattanooga, TN ― Growing older is inevitable, but many of the afflictions associated with old age—including dementia, disability and increased dependence on others—don’t have to be. So if you could, would you choose to break the mold of aging?

Psychiatrist and international speaker Timothy R. Jennings, M.D., may have some insights. Dr. Jennings prescribes simple, everyday actions we all can take to stave off disease, promote vitality, and prevent dementia and late-onset Alzheimer’s. “The choices we make now can help us to keep our minds sharp and maintain our independence as we age,” says Jennings.

An easy-to-use guide to maintaining brain and body health throughout life, The Aging Brain is based on solid, up-to-date scientific research, and the interventions discussed may help prevent progression toward dementia, even in those already showing signs of mild cognitive impairment. The recommendations also may help reduce disability and depression.

“This book isn’t just for people hoping to slow the aging process,” says Jennings. “It’s also for anyone who is a caregiver to someone at risk of or already beginning to suffer from dementia. It offers a hopeful, healthy way forward.”

Jennings, who maintains a private practice in Chattanooga, TN, has authored several books, including The God-Shaped Brain and The God-Shaped Heart. He has spent more than two decades researching the interface between biblical principles and modern brain science. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Life Fellow of the Southern Psychiatric Association, Jennings is president and founder of Come and Reason Ministries.
