‘Letter to Progressives’ Shares Cautionary Message

‘Letter to Progressives’ Shares Cautionary Message

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet or used by any means of social media sharing.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Entrepreneur, investor and lifelong educator David Parker refers to his new book, A San Francisco Conservative, as “a letter to progressives,” and in it, his message is clear.

“Stop trying to tax. Stop trying to distribute. And stop trying to solve problems by spending money,” Parker said in a recent interview.

In his book, Parker discusses both ends of the political spectrum and everything in between, and he reminds readers that the timeless principles of economics are essential to the preservation of American democracy.

Parker went back to school at age 50 to gain a deeper understanding of these enduring ideas — and the missteps of nations that deviated from them — to write A San Francisco Conservative. Just as his first book, Income and Wealth, provided readers with a thought-provoking examination of the foundations on which this nation’s freedom rests, his latest book also serves as a message of reassurance and challenge to the conventional political thinking of the day.

The issues Parker addresses are those he has focused on for more than half a century, throughout his 40-year career as a teacher in San Francisco public schools. In A San Francisco Conservative, he reminds readers that “crises” have affected the American economy numerous times over the nation’s history — but they pass.

Parker provides well-researched support for his belief that economic opportunities always exist. He cautions that government leaders — especially those who identify themselves as progressives — are jeopardizing the very democracy that has produced prosperity.

Themes covered in A San Francisco Conservative range from education to taxes and the political process itself. Parker challenges the widespread belief that a “conservative” (whether a resident of San Francisco or elsewhere) lacks empathy or a personal commitment to help those who are less fortunate. Government programs supported by many in today’s progressive movement to counter this misunderstanding merely increase the nation’s deficit in dangerous ways, Parker says.

Parker began his career in education at the age of 24 and served students at San Francisco’s inner-city public elementary schools for four decades as a music teacher, followed by 10 years as a volunteer. While pursuing his career in education, Parker became a successful real estate investor. It was success in business that focused his writing, teaching and career as a professional musician. Parker spent 20 years as a member of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, then 20 years as leader of the Dave Parker Sextet, which twice headlined the San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Festival. His essays have been featured in The Economist, The Financial Times and prestigious law journals.

Scheduled to coincide with the publication of David Parker’s playfully titled newest book, A San Francisco Conservative, a new podcast series sharing that title showcases Parker’s views on the proper role of government and how individuals can arrange for the principles of a free-market economy to work in their favor. As the podcast’s co-host, longtime journalist Tom Martin, has noted, “David Parker’s scholarly approach to the study of political economy provides much-needed historical context to important topics dominating the news, including the progressives’ call for dramatically increased government spending.”

An Individual Approach to Surviving the Troubled Economy

An Individual Approach to Surviving the Troubled Economy

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet or used by any means of social media sharing.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Former teacher David Parker delivers a crash course in economics in his book, Income and Wealth. His three main points? Why income and wealth are two different things; how wealth can be created on a minimum-wage income; and why it’s essential that government intervention in the lives of individuals be scaled back.

“The book includes business and economic insights carried with me since the age of 12, in addition to 40 years’ experience teaching inner-city public schools, 40 years a professional musician and 40 years of real estate investment,” Parker wrote in the book’s foreword.

In Income and Wealth, Parker provides a detailed analysis of how someone earning minimum wage can become financially independent in one decade, drawing upon the business and economic insights he formed during 40 years of studying economic history and principles, teaching in public schools, and being a professional musician and real estate developer.

His prescription for wealth creation may not be easy — but it is certainly effective. He urges all young people, regardless of their earning power, to follow the plan that worked for him. “Those who choose to follow this method, even without prior success, will generate significant income within 10 years,” he said.

Minimum wages in the U.S. today vary between $7.25 and $15 an hour, but Parker believes financial success is possible in a decade because of his own experience.

“There’s no relationship between income and wealth,” Parker added. “You can do what you really want in life. You can be an artist; you can be a schoolteacher; you can open a restaurant … Do it because you want to do it.”

Income And Wealth also provides a framework for reflecting on the role of government in our lives and the opportunities available to each of us. Parker presents a compelling case for the benefits of free market economics and shares strategies and insights that can be used as building blocks for a step-by-step plan for financial prosperity.

David Parker began his career in education at age 24 and served students in San Francisco’s inner-city public elementary schools for 40 years as a music teacher. While pursuing his career, Parker also became a successful real estate investor. It was success in business that focused his writing, teaching and career as a professional musician. Cliven Bundy Shares His Account of Armed Standoff on Nevada Cattle Ranch

Cliven Bundy Shares His Account of Armed Standoff on Nevada Cattle Ranch

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet, or used by any means of social media sharing.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Whatever happened to Nevada cattle rancher Cliven Bundy?

“It’s not what you think,” said prolific Christian author and Leadership Books co-founder Michael Stickler, who spent more than 60 days documenting Bundy’s side of the conflict while Bundy was incarcerated in federal prison.

Stickler details the events (as told to him by Cliven Bundy) preceding, during and following the 2014 standoff between Bundy’s armed supporters and federal agents. The standoff made national news and resulted in Bundy and 18 others being charged with federal crimes.
“January 6 protesters are facing the full weight of the government, but Cliven Bundy went through it first,” Stickler added.

In Cliven Bundy: American Patriot, Stickler shares Bundy’s side of the standoff, which was the result of a 21-year legal dispute between Bundy and the Bureau of Land Management involving the grazing of Bundy’s cattle on federal land.

With plenty of intrigue, twists and turns, Cliven Bundy: American Patriot also includes Bundy’s personal account of “life lost” and the continued costs that the “Bundy 19” endure in prison.

“From here, Cliven shares his personal inner fears and hopes for the future,” Stickler said. “It’s a burden that weighs heavily upon Cliven’s heart.”

What Became of the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave? Writings of the Late Dr. Noomen Offer a Positive Outlook for Humanity

What Became of the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave?
Writings of the Late Dr. Noomen Offer a Positive Outlook for Humanity

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet or used by any means of social media sharing.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2022 Controversial Supreme Court rulings, legislative actions, or executive orders from a president can sometimes feel like an excessively autocratic approach to government, leading many citizens to push back. Do you ever wonder what happened to the land of the free?

Author and scholar Dr. Pieter Noomen had some thoughts about freedom and government, and he wrote about them on his website, www.wordsforall.org … a treasure trove of philosophical and spiritual information that Dr. Noomen (who passed away three years ago) said he was given from the highest of sources. The website access and information are free for all.

“It is erroneous to think that a structure is more important than its parts. It is the other way around,” Dr. Noomen wrote. “A corrupt government that passes laws that benefit many is still corrupt. But citizens living in a corrupt society are free — and capable — to keep their insights and striving pure and honest.”

Dr. Noomen’s writings speak largely about his belief system and often refer to messages he said he received from a higher power, but his words can resonate with all, regardless of faith. He attributes his quotations to that higher power, rather than himself.

“Engaging in noble causes or producing beautiful things is not a substitute for one’s mental and spiritual health,” he wrote. “The sanity of humanity is in people discovering — and bravely holding onto — their and earth’s universal and spiritual roots. Sanity is not attached to particular external achievements, even if those seem to improve justice, beauty, health and protection for many.”

He also wrote that “children need adults, adults need governments, laws, codes of behavior, etc.”

Born in the Netherlands, Pieter Noomen worked as a psychotherapist and staff member at a Los Angeles church. He completed doctoral studies in theology and pastoral psychology at the Free University of Amsterdam and became senior minister of three Protestant churches.

An example of Dr. Noomen’s Wisdoms of the Week from his website, as we continue to hold out hope that better days lie ahead:

“In the full universal reality from which our earthly world is isolated, the freedom of choice is absolute. Nothing is impossible there. … more often than we realize, we can be on top of our decision-making and of our behavior. The choice of what person to be or with what kind of attitude is ours and ours alone.”

Numbers Reveal COVID Lockdown’s Human Toll

Numbers Reveal COVID Lockdown’s Human Toll

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet, or used by any means of social media sharing.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

How does a nation, and a world, respond to one of the greatest public health crises of our times? And at what cost?

With the logic of a lawyer and the scientific expertise of an immunologist, Hugh McTavish, J.D., Ph.D., walks readers through the COVID-19 pandemic and the policy decisions that were made to keep the virus in check in his eye-opening book, COVID Lockdown Insanity. Dr. McTavish’s fact-filled exploration reaches beyond the simple metrics of case and death counts and reveals the unsettling consequences of society’s responses to this disease. His careful examination of the scientific evidence related to COVID-19 transmission and his analyses of both the human and economic costs of the lockdown strategy illuminate the dysfunctionality of the government’s policy response. In the end, he lights a path toward making more enlightened decisions that offer hope of real solutions.

In the book, Dr. McTavish dissects the data that shows:

  • The COVID lockdowns threw 63 million Americans into major depression.
  • All evidence suggests that the lockdown response to COVID failed to decrease COVID deaths at all.
  • Even if the lockdowns prevented 200,000 COVID deaths, which they probably did not, the lockdowns caused more loss of life in increased suicides, drug overdose deaths, cancer deaths and heart disease deaths than they saved in prevented COVID deaths.
  • For every 1 COVID death prevented, the lockdowns caused these harms: 1/3 of a death of despair (suicide or drug overdose); 316 people thrown into major depression; 127 people out of work; 350 students out of school; 1,640 people denied the right to live their lives as they wish.
  • Mask wearing has “little or no effect” on COVID cases or deaths.
  • Hand washing and hand sanitizer use is the best intervention and could dramatically reduce COVID deaths, but this was underemphasized.
  • Asymptomatic people very rarely spread COVID.
  • Children do not spread COVID, and closing schools had no effect on COVID spread at all, and we knew that by the summer of 2020, and CDC staff wrote a paper saying so in January 2021.

In conclusion, Dr. McTavish says, “Lockdowns have no advantage at all. If you think life is better than death, a long life is better than a shorter life, happiness is better than depression, more money is better than less, education is better than ignorance, child abuse and domestic abuse are bad things, and more personal freedom is better than less, then you agree the lockdowns were a mistake.”

Hugh McTavish is a Ph.D. biochemist and immunologist and a patent attorney. He has authored 18 refereed scientific journal articles and is the inventor of 21 U.S. patents. He has also written two prior books on public policy and nature. He has started two pharmaceutical companies off his own inventions. He lives near St. Paul, Minnesota.

How Our Government Really Works—What Every Teenager Should Know

How Our Government Really Works—What Every Teenager Should Know

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet, or used by any means of social media sharing)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Whether you’re a student, parent, educator or engaged citizen seeking the truth, You Call This Democracy? How to Fix Our Government and Deliver Power to the People from public policy expert Elizabeth Rusch paves the way for every citizen to not only understand the flaws in our current democracy but to also fix them.

“We think we live in a democracy. One person, one vote. But how democratic is our government really?” Rusch asks. “The hard truth is that political power is not shared equally among all citizens. It shouldn’t matter if you are rich, poor, urban, rural, Democrat, Republican, old or young when you mark your ballot. Your race and gender shouldn’t matter either. But they all do.”

You Call This Democracy? gives an honest view of how our democracy truly functions, who really has the power and why (and how that power impacts politicians and policies) and how we can work together to make our democracy more responsive to the will of the people.

Consider the following:

  1. Presidents can take office without winning the popular vote.
  2. Voting districts are drawn by politicians for their own benefit.
  3. Millions of citizens—young, old, poor, people of color, women—are blocked from voting.
  4. Money wields much more influence than the wishes of ordinary Americans.

You Call This Democracy? offers insightful solutions to undemocratic elements plaguing our government, with inspirational examples of citizens already working to make change. International comparisons, extensive sources and resources prompt readers to dig deeper ― and take action.

Supplementary materials to the book include Rusch’s “50 State Democracy Report Card” (https://www.youcallthis.com/your-state), where people can check to see how democracy fares in their state overall and on specific metrics, and how they can strengthen democracy in their state; and a series of short, fun, informative videos on the issues covered in the book, called Flash Course on Democracy, available free at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUOGZlteO6dRY7aQV1uqpddW1C1maGLxP.
Additionally, discussion guides and debate questions are available at www.youcallthis.com.

Elizabeth Rusch is the author of 20 award-winning books, and more than 100 magazine and newspaper articles. She is also the creator of the “50 State Democracy Report Card” and the video series Flash Course on Democracy. You Call This Democracy?, an Amazon Bestseller, was featured in the New York Times Book Review and received a starred review from Kirkus, which called it “a riveting must-read.” Rusch and her work have also been featured in The Discovery Channel, Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud, The Wall Street Journal, Teacher magazine, Parenting Magazine and Working Mother, among many others. Rusch has a master’s in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and has served as a Jacob K. Javits Fellow in the U.S. Senate. Urban Blight and Struggle for Power Fuel Tale of Political Tug-of-War

Urban Blight and Struggle for Power Fuel Tale of Political Tug-of-War

(This press release may be reprinted in part or entirety by any print or broadcast media outlet, or used by any means of social media sharing)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Democratic President Bob Jordan and Republican House Speaker Mitchell Lawrence have known each other for years and share the philosophy that collaboration between the parties is the best way to govern. Their view, however, isn’t as popular as they’d hoped.

After 50 years of failed governmental attempts to improve failed inner-cities, Jordan and Lawrence choose a private development as the mechanism to institute change.

The project, dubbed A Hand Up, has an ambitious vision: transform the inner-cities that are beset with urban blight into safe, vital municipalities with great schools, thriving businesses and other options for recreation. In other words, give people a reason to want to be there.

Recreating a “new” city from the ashes of urban squalor, however, requires the cooperation of and support from government and the loss of power and control is more than current leaders are willing to abide.

Money and power are vested in the status quo. Politicians from both parties, big companies, unions, and the media thrive in this environment. Changes in approach threaten their power and they must do all they can to stop them. Out of this need for the status quo a plot to assassinate begins to grow.

While first and foremost a novel written to entertain, A Hand Up from Martin Laurent resonates with real-world problems that plague big-city projects and the political divide that prevents progress. Laurent’s narrative compellingly underscores the critical need for government entities to collaborate on even the most fundamental challenges. Perhaps a novel that supports neither (or both) sides of the political divide offers the best chance for building bridges.

Author Martin Laurent worked for General Motors for 32 years. With an educational background in mechanical engineering and business. Practical experience in facilities engineering, industrial relations and corporate strategic planning, and manufacturing management, Laurent’s expertise in change management lends authenticity to A Hand Up, in which he skillfully describes a common sense process for inner-city improvement.

Since his retirement, he consulted for a time before deciding to simply concentrate on life in Santa Fe, where he lives with his wife of over 50 years, Keren. The couple has travelled extensively.

Laurent has also served on the board of the Santa Fe Recovery Center since 2008. When he began, the center was a 23-bed residential treatment facility that provided a 30-day recovery program. Today, the center has expanded its capacity by five times and offers a wider array of services. The center has been recognized by the State of New Mexico for its excellence. Additional expansions are planned.

Laurent is also the author of The Third Bounce and Pray for Rain, a series that centers on these same two politicians and their wives.
