CAREGIVING Hope And Health For Caregiving Families

After a life-threatening accident stopped her completely in her tracks a few years ago, author Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse and her family came to truly understand that we are all one event from a lifestyle change.

Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter clearly illustrated the importance of this when she said: “There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers; those who currently are caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.” Hence, the new book by Cruse with Patrick Egan has arrived, Caregiving: Hope and Health for Caregiving Families (ISBN: 9780757321931 – May 2019 — $14.95). While some people choose to take care of loved ones after they can no longer take care of themselves, many others must do so for a myriad of other reasons, often financial. It can be a crisis situation, such as an accident, or the long-term effects of aging. In any case, the days are often long and draining—both for the family care-giver and the paid professional—and the choices to be made are often confusing, difficult, and daunting.

Filled with practical, easily implementable advice, this illuminating book helps readers sort through the puzzle that forms the caregiving world. Topics include: identifying the roles of caregivers; dealing with burnout; finding ways to compartmentalize and separate without guilt; using technology to make life easier; building bridges through teamwork; downsizing; and navigating end-of-life issues. The first book to provide stories from the perspective of both caregiver and caree, it enables caregivers to better understand their fears and feelings. The result is a positive, unified approach to care.

About the Authors:

Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse is the founding Chairperson of the National Association of Children of Alcoholics, and founder of Onsite Workshops. She has written 19 books translated into 13 languages, and broke ground and fostered a movement with her works, Another Chance: Hope and Health for the Alcoholic Family and Learning to Love Yourself. Sharon has traveled the world and developed programs in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Canada, and has appeared on The Phil Donahue Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Larry King Show, as well as in multiple media events.

Patrick Egan is a caregiving “gentrepreneur” and the caregiver for his parents who live in a senior community nearby. He is the founder of NurturingNet, a company that helps others use technology in a way that enhances and adds fun to the caregiver experience. A former VP of Human Resources for the Global HealthCare Exchange that was created by industry-leading health care firms including Medtronic, GE, Johnson and Johnson, Abbott and Baxter International. He holds a BA in Communications from the University of Colorado and an MBA in Management from the College of St. Thomas.

Words For All: Insightful Writings That Can Help Anyone Learn What Life Is Really All About

Dr. Pieter Noomen’s personal spiritual path widened, unexpectedly and quite sensationally, about 25 years ago at a time when he was unhappy with the way his life was going, especially certain events in his personal life, and he was getting older. At that time he became familiar with the insights of Dr. Peter D. Francuch, who communicated with what he called ‘the Positive State.’ Noomen read about, and met, others who experienced a direct, personal connection with the ‘One Who Is Life’ — and that is when his own life changed significantly. He shares his experiences and offers access to the Source of that information in his writings on the website at www.wordsforall.org.

Noomen posits that directly or indirectly, life stems from one common source and that to connect with that source is the highest level of existence we can achieve on earth.

Over the course of many years, Noomen experienced transformative “visits” on the spirit level — and he freely shares the universal and eternal facts of life that were com-municated to him on his website, www.wordsforall.org.

As he explains on his website, “I can only say that the information came from a pres-ence on my innermost spiritual level I was in communication with for some time. The words seem the result of my spirit merging with the spirit of life It/Her/Himself.”

Visitors to Noomen’s website can read about the 12 components of life through his 12 booklets: Oneness, Love, Life, Fire, Space, Connectedness, Progression, Effect, Free-dom, Joy, Differentness and Harmony. Throughout his writings, Noomen avoids using the name of any deity, such as God, and instead uses what he refers to as The Seven Names, each of which relates on a human level to the situation at hand: One Holy, Love, Truth, Proper, Healing, Manifestation and Energy.

A series of lessons on the site shares 147 thought-provoking questions and the illumi-nating answers that came to him during his extensive communications with the All Spir-it.

“In death,” Noomen writes, “everyone will, without exception and in a purely personal way, find out whether or not there is another dimension of existence.” The reflections shared on Noomen’s website invite readers to not wait until the end of their earthly lives for the answer.

Born in the Netherlands, Pieter Noomen completed doctoral studies in theology and pastoral psychology at the Free University of Amsterdam and was senior minister of three protestant churches. Later he worked as a psychotherapist and as a staff mem-ber of a Los Angeles metropolitan church. He was involved in mental health issues like suicide prevention and hospice. His personal spiritual path widened quite sensationally 25 years ago when he was drawn to the insights of Dr. Peter D. Francuch (1934-2001), who wrote about his communications with what he called the Positive State. This led to Noomen’s interest in experiencing a direct, personal connection with the One Who is Life. Noomen is retired and resides in Hollywood, California.

Bailey, No Ordinary Cat
Delightful For All Ages

For fans of Grumpy Cat and Cats of Instagram, there’s a new cat in town — Bailey, No Ordinary Cat, of Facebook and Instagram fame, is an extraordinary cat with a growing fan base. His videos have garnered millions of views and have been shared by Ellen, Good Morning America, ABC News, CBS News and more.

What makes Bailey more addictive than catnip? In addition to his adorable expressions and hilarious, heartfelt antics, Bailey has a penchant for doing things that are demonstratively uncatlike — things like taking bubble baths (and enjoying them), sitting attentively in a chair and being read to (for hours), getting a “pet”-icure and exuding unending patience while co-raising his human siblings Abby and Hannah (yes, there is photographic evidence that Bailey helped with potty-training).

To celebrate the unique, quirky spirit of this one-of-a-kind feline, his human mom, Erin Merryn, has released Bailey, No Ordinary Cat. Filled with more than 100 pages of color photographs and captions from the voice of Bailey himself, this personal peek into the life of one purr-fectly precious feline will delight cat lovers of all ages.

Bailey, like all cats, was not destined to live forever. But through Bailey, No Ordinary Cat, his big heart and even bigger personality will continue to evoke love and laughter well beyond his years here on earth.

Apocalypse Survivors Groomed For Life At The Edge Of The Solar System

For those who’ve ever tried to imagine a post-apocalyptic Earth, Dr. Donald Hricik has come up with some interesting scenarios of his own in Our Great Escape; Part 1: Dumbers. The year is 2360. Survivors are being groomed for a new life on one of Jupiter’s moons after having been kept alive for centuries on mind-altering drugs.

Here’s the twist. The man picked to head the exodus to the edge of the solar system, a doctor, discovers that these survivors are losing their memories and emotions and even dying in large numbers — the results of a flaw in the drug’s design. The author grapples with larger themes of surviving a man-made planetary catastrophe as well as whether or not life is even worth it if it must be lived on mind-altering drugs that come at great cost. First in a two-part series, Dr. Hricik admits he wrote Our Great Escape while undergoing seismic shifts in his own life.

“I wrote it while I was dealing with my wife’s illness and death from severe dementia,” said Dr. Hricik. “That’s why you see themes of memory loss, dementia and death percolating throughout.”

Born in Ohio, Dr. Hricik is currently Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and served as the Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension at University Hospital’s Cleveland Medical Center from 1993 to 2017. His research interests have focused on complications of immunosuppression and immune monitoring of kidney transplant recipients. He has published more than 180 articles and books, and 35 book chapters. When he’s not writing, he enjoys painting and fishing.

Inspiring Story Captures Heart And Soul Of Young Abe Lincoln

When Abe Lincoln arrived in New Salem, Illinois, he was a young man who could barely sign his own name. At age 21, he admitted to only having one month of formal education, and he was desperate to learn. What happened in New Salem between 1831 and 1837 would both haunt and motivate him throughout the rest of his life.

From author Sam Rawlins comes the inspiring story, Young Lincoln of New Salem, scheduled for release in mid-April 2019. Young Lincoln follows the future president through six pivotal years on the rugged Illinois frontier, where Lincoln went from store clerk to postmaster to captain of militia in the Black Hawk War. And along the way, he entered into a life-altering romance with Ann Rutledge, and that heartbreaking relationship is explored in-depth here.

Rawlins’ quest to share an accurate depiction of a young Abe Lincoln took him to New Salem and the surrounding area. During decades of research, he pored over more than 150 written sources, including countless letters, interviews with first-party individuals and other first-party eyewitness accounts.

The immersive story makes history come alive, giving readers a glimpse of Lincoln as his contemporaries saw him, providing a fresh understanding of this man and his remarkable life.

Sam Rawlins was raised in Oklahoma and Arkansas in the late 1940s and early 1950s. An immediate interest in history became an essential part of who he was, and from the age of 12, Rawlins became inspired by the life of Abraham Lincoln.

In the 1960s, after graduating from the Army Medical Training Center in San Antonio, Texas, Rawlins served as a medic in Southeast Asia. He was able to observe the destructive effects of PTSD in patients, in friends and in himself. These life-changing experiences inspired his first book, A Return to Meadow Wood, which tells the story of a Vietnam veteran who seeks healing from PTSD and closure to painful memories.

During the last 10 years, Rawlins experienced a near-death event and a subsequent faith-inspired episode, both of which not only matured him as a human being, but also strengthened him as a writer, leading to the inspirational quality that often threads its way through his work.

The Aging Brain: A Road Map for Keeping A Sharp Mind Into Old Age

Chattanooga, TN ― Growing older is inevitable, but many of the afflictions associated with old age—including dementia, disability and increased dependence on others—don’t have to be. So if you could, would you choose to break the mold of aging?

Psychiatrist and international speaker Timothy R. Jennings, M.D., may have some insights. Dr. Jennings prescribes simple, everyday actions we all can take to stave off disease, promote vitality, and prevent dementia and late-onset Alzheimer’s. “The choices we make now can help us to keep our minds sharp and maintain our independence as we age,” says Jennings.

An easy-to-use guide to maintaining brain and body health throughout life, The Aging Brain is based on solid, up-to-date scientific research, and the interventions discussed may help prevent progression toward dementia, even in those already showing signs of mild cognitive impairment. The recommendations also may help reduce disability and depression.

“This book isn’t just for people hoping to slow the aging process,” says Jennings. “It’s also for anyone who is a caregiver to someone at risk of or already beginning to suffer from dementia. It offers a hopeful, healthy way forward.”

Jennings, who maintains a private practice in Chattanooga, TN, has authored several books, including The God-Shaped Brain and The God-Shaped Heart. He has spent more than two decades researching the interface between biblical principles and modern brain science. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Life Fellow of the Southern Psychiatric Association, Jennings is president and founder of Come and Reason Ministries.
