A Rare Look At PTSD Through A Child’s Eyes: Healing From Trauma

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“An incredible
memoir . . . an important part of the still unhealed wounds of war.
Christal has given as much of her heart to this story as her father gave
to his country.”
—Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, writer, activist, and educator

“A
harrowing portrait of the past’s ability to haunt the present…Presley
has found stability in her father’s story, and her willingness to share
it—as well as her own revelations—will be appreciated by readers who
deal with any form of wartime PTSD.”
—Publisher’s Weekly

“Whether
you are a professional who treats veterans and their loved ones, or a
person at risk for military PTSD, or anyone who cares, you will be
profoundly moved by this eloquent memoir.”
—Frank Ochberg, MD, award-winning mental health expert who helped define the term “post-traumatic stress disorder”

“Thirty
Days with My Father is an important addition to the literature of
trauma psychology, shining a beacon of hope for transformation and
healing.”
—From the Foreword by Edward Tick, PhD, author, War and the Soul and founding co-director, Soldier’s Heart

“To
me, post-traumatic stress disorder was just a bunch of words. All I
knew was that it had something to do with my father’s brain, and he
seemed to be going crazy. And I knew it was bad because my mom told me
that if anyone found out how sick he was, they’d come and take him away
forever, and they’d take me away too, and she couldn’t live like that.
If he had to be that sick, I wanted him to have something everybody
could understand. So I picked brain cancer.”
—From Thirty Days with My Father

Atlanta,
GA – When Christal Presley’s father was eighteen, he was drafted to
Vietnam. Like many men of that era who returned home with post-traumatic
stress disorder (PTSD), he was never the same. He spent much of her
childhood locked in his room, gravitating between the deepest depression
and unspeakable rage, unable to participate in holidays or birthdays.
At a very young age, Christal learned to walk on eggshells, doing
anything and everything not to provoke him, but this dance caused her to
become a profoundly disturbed little girl. She acted out at school,
engaged in self-mutilation, and couldn’t make friends. At the age of
eighteen, Christal left home and didn’t look back. She barely spoke to
her father for the next thirteen years.

To any outsider, Christal
appeared to be doing well: she earned a BA and a master’s, got married,
and traveled to India. But despite all these accomplishments, Christal
still hadn’t faced her biggest challenge—her relationship with her
father. In 2009, something changed. Christal decided it was time to
begin the healing process, and she extended an olive branch. She came up
with what she called “The Thirty Day Project,” a month’s worth of
conversations during which she would finally ask her father difficult
questions about Vietnam. Thirty Days with My Father: Finding Peace from
Wartime PTSD (HCI) is a gritty yet heartwarming story of those thirty
days of a daughter and father reconnecting in a way that will inspire us
all to seek the truth, even from life’s most difficult relationships.
This beautifully realized memoir shares how one woman and her father
discovered profound lessons about their own strength and will to
survive, shedding an inspiring light on generational PTSD. Just
released, it is already number one on Amazon’s list of best-sellers.

Christal
Presley, PhD, is the founder of United Children of Veterans
(www.unitedchildrenofveterans.com), a website that provides resources on
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children of war veterans. She
obtained her PhD in education in 2009, and is an instructional mentor
teacher in Atlanta Public Schools. This is her first book.

Crowd Control Takes Humor To A Whole New Level

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mark Cuban,
owner of the Dallas Mavericks, on LA Weekly: “Cash is the ultimate live
comic and AXS TV is the ESPN of music and pop culture, including live
comedy. He is hilarious and it’s a great fit.”

Manhattan Beach,
CA – For fifteen years Cash Levy has entertained sold-out comedy clubs
throughout the country and appeared many times on Comedy Central, Fox,
NBC, and CBS’s The Late Show with Craig Ferguson, to name a few. He has
performed for our troops around the world to rave reviews, and can be
heard daily on Sirius XM Radio. Regarded as one of the top improvisers
in the industry, when everyone in Hollywood told Cash that improvisation
was not something TV would ever broadcast – he set out to prove them
wrong!

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Cash went right to
the top. Knowing that AXS.tv had an emphasis on live programming and
having admired Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks) as a
risk-taking visionary, Cash approached him about his unique show. The
result was Cuban signed him for a one-hour comedy special called ‘Crowd
Control’ that airs on national TV January 20th at 9:00 pm PST. It will
be the first ever comedy special to premiere on AXS.tv!

In
deciding to shoot his own special, Cash not only took an enormous
financial risk by using his own money, but a huge career risk in
delivering his stand-up, ‘off the cuff’ routine to a sold-out theater
with seven cameras rolling (no pressure there!). Yet against the odds,
Cash Levy proved the naysayers wrong and is living his dream by
producing his own TV show.

Crowd Control is the first ever
comedy special in the history of AXS.tv and is the most unscripted,
first self-produced, one-hour special to be broadcast. Cash spent two
years putting his dream together but once he completed it, he knew he had a winner.
 Levy
uses his skills as one of the nation’s finest improvisers to connect
with his audience and is known for spontaneously creating jokes specific
to the event – regardless of playing to a comedy club, corporate event,
or even our troops overseas – he is just that versatile!  Levy’s
podcast, Cashing In With T.J. Miller, is featured on The Nerdist Network
and is one of the top comedy shows in the country. The palpable
chemistry between Miller and Levy contributes to the show’s huge
success. For a complete description and review, please visit:  www.freakinawesomenetwork.net/2012/10/podcast-purview-cashing-in-with-tj-miller/.
Cash Levy makes a perfect show guest and performer whose raw talent is
evidenced on Crowd Control. Set your DVR to record this groundbreaking
show on January 20th – it’s sure to be remembered as one of the most
entertaining, gut-busting shows ever!

For more information on this incredibly talented comedian please visit his website at:  www.cashlevy.com, or to schedule an interview/booking please contact the person listed above.

The Dead Celebrity Cookbook – Bringing Oscar Favorites To Your Very Own Party

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY –
For anyone who loves Hollywood memorabilia, is an entertainment junkie,
and loves to eat and cook – they will treasure Frank DeCaro’s The Dead
Celebrity Cookbook: A Resurrection of Recipes from More Than 145 Stars
of Stage and Screen (HCI Books). Frank compiled favorite recipes from
some of Hollywood’s biggest names; including Lucille Ball, Elizabeth
Taylor, Sonny Bono, Liberace, Michael Jackson, John Denver, Frank
Sinatra, Rock Hudson, Humphrey Bogart, and Peter Falk, just to name a
few.

“Flip on a movie channel and get cooking! Required reading.” – Billy Heller, New York Post.

“We hear Rock Hudson’s Cannoli is delicious!” – Entertainment Weekly.

“In
The Dead Celebrity Cookbook, author Frank DeCaro has collected and
presented an array of recipes by beloved (and dead) stars….” –
people.com

“Celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Andy Warhol
may be gone, but their favorite dishes will never be forgotten. Try one
tonight!” – oprah.com

“While Halloween might come only once a year, there’s never a bad time for The Dead Celebrity Cookbook.” – bonappetit.com

“A veritable who’s who of Hollywood’s Golden Age.” – Sara Bonisteel, epicurious.com.

“The
book marries DeCaro’s twin obsessions with movie/celebrity/pop culture
and food. The recipes reflect a happier time when carbs, mayo and butter
were still considered friendlies…”
– Elena Ferretti, foxnews.com.

“Chow down on your favorite dead stars’ recipes. Come on, it won’t kill you!” – Michael Musto, The Village Voice

Inspired
by a “Dead Celebrity Party” during his college years, DeCaro thought
the one thing missing from the event was the food of the dead. Since
then, he’s been collecting recipes of the stars and lucky for us, he’s
put them together in, THE DEAD CELEBRITY COOKBOOK: A Resurrection of
Recipes from More Than 145 Stars of Stage and Screen (HCI Books).

DeCaro,
who is best known for his nearly 7-year stint as the movie critic on
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and now heard weekdays on his own
call-in radio show, gives us a giggle while feeding us treats from
Tinsel Town like: Liberace’s Sticky Buns, Mae West’s Fruit Compote, John
Ritter’s Favorite Fudge and Bea Arthur’s Vegetarian Breakfast.

THE
DEAD CELEBRITY COOKBOOK is here to remind you that before there were
celebrity chefs, there were celebrities who fancied themselves as chefs.
They were whipping up culinary delights, and sometimes sharing them
with us on shows like Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas or even Johnny Carson.
DeCaro gives us some entertaining and informative commentary before each
section of recipes in chapters that include: “Talk Show Chow,” “An
All-Night Oscar Buff,” and “I Lunch Lucy,” a whole section dedicated to
the red-haired TV goddess.

Says DeCaro, “I miss those days when
celebrities still had mystery about them, and a glimpse inside their
radar ranges seemed, for any fan, like a window into the world of
glamour and excitement, which is why I put together this book.” This
book delivers recipes that the stars are dying for you to make.

Following
on the success of The Dead Celebrity Cookbook, Frank recently released
Christmas In Tinseltown: Celebrity Recipes and Hollywood Memories from
Six Feet Under the Mistletoe. Packed with holiday favorites from some of
the greatest stars of all time and written in his infamous style of
humor and sarcasm, both books give readers a unique and fun opportunity
to make new traditions in the kitchen.

Right Now Enough Is Enough! – The Answer To Kicking Addictions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Houston, TX –
Peter Sacco’s new book, Right Now Enough Is Enough! Overcoming
Addictions And Bad Habits For Good (Book Locker Publishing), is
enjoying  remarkable success both as a supplement to proven support
groups such as AA and NA and, with its practical approach to mental
health, an easy-to-understand, personal self-help manual to effectively
overcome addictions and bad habits.

Peter Sacco, noted
psychologist and author, spent nearly a decade trying to find out why
people have such a tough time saying ‘no,’ and then sticking to it, when
it comes to addictions, bad habits or negative thinking patterns. In
his book, Sacco delves deep into the addictive mind to find answers.

“I
have been compiling information, insights and ideas from recovering
alcoholics, substance abusers, addicts, mental health sufferers and
world-leading practitioners in addictions and mental health,” Sacco
says.  “Only then did I develop the principles of Right Now Enough Is
Enough. When applied, they have an overwhelming success rate!”

Sacco’s
powerful book provides life-changing tools that encourage readers to
look deep inside themselves to find the root of their problems and gain a
better understanding of changes they need to make in order to attract
and attain the most positive outcomes for success in every area of life.

“Using
cognitive behavioral therapy techniques along with the law of
intention, this book breaks new ground in combining psychology with
spirituality for overcoming addiction,” Sacco continues. “Plus, it
employs the principles from the law of attraction, teaching individuals
how to become what they most want to be in life, as well as showing them
how to receive what they want.”

Sacco’s latest book is
undoubtedly one of the most effective books dealing with negative habits
and addictions to come along in a very long time. Concise yet simple
steps help us determine what makes us tick and fundamental, no-nonsense
advice helps us change a destructive mindset and leads instead to making
positive, life-changing decisions.

Peter Sacco is an author,
psychology professor and former private practitioner. He is the author
of many popular international books. He is also former Editor-in-Chief
of Vices: The Magazine for Addictions, Habits and Well-Being, and author
of more than 700 magazine articles. Sacco has received the Award of
Excellence in Teaching and lectures at universities in both the USA and
Canada. He currently hosts a weekly radio show, “Mental Health Matters”
which discusses mental health, relationship and addiction issues and

Sample Recipes:

Euphoria Nuggets
15–20 nuggets

These
energy nuggets are great to make as a snack for your kids. Actually,
your kids will love to help you make them! They are loaded with protein, healthy fats,
natural sugars, and flavor. They are great for marathon runners or
athletes who need to restore their glycogen levels on the go. Who needs a
candy bar anyway?

Karmic Health Tip: Agave nectar is a lower
glycemic sweetener, but make sure you buy the raw dark blue agave to
ensure the least amount of processing.

1 cup shelled sunflower seeds
⅓ cup pitted dates
½ cup almonds
⅓ cup raw dark blue agave nectar
3–5 tablespoons raw cacao powder
Pinch of nutmeg and/or cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In
a food processor, process the sunflower seeds and dates into a fine
meal. Add the remaining ingredients and process until sticky and blended
together. Refrigerate for 10 minutes to harden and then roll into
one-inch balls.

*******

Indian-Spiced Coconut Yam Soup
8 servings

I
love Indian fare and I love yams, so I’ve combined the two together to
make a dreamy, creamy, delicious soup that will light up your taste buds
and transport you right to Marrakesh . . . well, maybe not, but
dreaming is fun!

Karmic Health Tip: Coconut oil is loaded with
medium-chain fatty acids that help you burn fat and speed up your
metabolism, and it is also great to use directly on your skin. I leave a
jar in the shower for an après shower smoothing.

1 tablespoon coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon fresh ground ginger
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 teaspoons garam masala
3 large carrots, diced
3 large garnet yams, peeled and cubed
4 cups vegetable broth or bullion (2 cubes with 4 cups water)
1 15-ounce can coconut milk
Sea salt and cracked black pepper, to taste
Cinnamon

Heat
the oil in a large soup pot over medium heat and sauté the ginger,
garlic, celery, and onion until translucent and soft. Add the garam
masala and stir to combine to release the flavor of the spice. Add the
carrots, yams, and veggie broth. Turn the heat to high and bring to a
boil, turn down to a simmer, and cover. Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes or
until the yams are soft. Remove from the heat and stir in the coconut
milk. Puree using a hand blender until creamy smooth and season with
salt and pepper to taste. Top with cinnamon, to taste, before serving.

Southern Vapors: A True Story Of Silver Spoon To Straitjacket – And Back!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Atlanta, GA –
Southern Vapors (CreateSpace) is an intriguing memoir by Lynn Garson
that chronicles her life growing up on West Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta’s
wealthiest street. Raised by nursemaids, butlers and chauffeurs, her
very social Jewish parents were often absent on long trips abroad, and
spent much of their time at home making sure Lynn was reflecting the
proper family image to the world at the expense of nurturing or
intimacy. A sensitive, creative child, the emotional abandonment of
Lynn’s childhood created deep, personal insecurities that finally became
unleashed in her 40’s, and changed her world forever, culminating in
her voluntary commitment to a mental institution.

Southern
Vapors is not simply a memoir about lifestyle, family dysfunction and
depression that often rings true in other memoirs from the rich and
famous. It is Garson’s rare ability to capture painful, poignant
snapshots of life that gives the reader total clarity and
self-recognition, and her self-deprecating sense of humor that makes her
story so real and appealing.

Lynn offers a glimpse of her
early life as an heiress-in-waiting, living in the big white house that
was more Tara than Tara itself, and chronicles her life from childhood
through college, law school, marriage, children, careers, divorce and
single parenthood. Once the owner of one of Atlanta’s most prestigious
retail stores, it is this sense of style that pervades her book.

The
descent from the dizzying heights of prosperity follow, ending in seven
days locked in a low income mental institution and a number of weeks as
an outpatient. The assortment of colorful characters at the hospital
becomes the subject of a number of vignettes in the book, and Lynn’s
eloquent description of their multiple eccentricities will have readers
both laughing and crying. Struggling with her own depression, she
details everything she tries in her quest for recovery – from
traditional therapy to Native American shamanism – and all in between.
She explores her relationship with each parent, unearthing long-held
secrets, and finally achieves reconciliation with her mother and a
tentative peace with her father, who is no longer living.

As
evidenced by the rave reviews, this attention-grabbing read is difficult
to put down. With total transparency, the author bares her soul with
such compelling honesty, humor and aplomb that readers feel a connection
– like a life-long friend sharing her deepest and darkest secrets with
them. By the end of the book Lynn has her health back and almost a year
under her belt as a practicing attorney in a prestigious firm, marking a
triumphant ending to a remarkably inspiring story.

Lynn Garson
graduated from Tulane University and has lived in Paris, New York and
Hong Kong. She has three children and currently lives in Atlanta. She is
an in-demand motivational speaker for topics including depression,
eating disorders and/or addiction, family issues, and more. Southern
Vapors is her first book and is currently being adapted for the stage.

Gangster Redemption: Showing Teens That A Life of Crime Is No Life At All

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West
Melbourne, FL – Gangster Redemption (LL Research & Consulting) is
the life story of Larry Lawton, one of America’s most notorious jewel
robbers. Growing up in the Bronx and Brooklyn, New York, Larry was an
altar boy until the day he was sexually molested by a priest. As a teen
needing to prove his manhood, he began a criminal career that included
‘enforcer’ for the Gambino crime family and six years up and down the
East Coast pulling off jewelry heists worth over 15 million dollars – to
the frustration of both the police and the FBI!

Co-written by
8-time New York Times bestselling author Peter Golenbock, Gangster
Redemption truly is the life story of a ‘Goodfella’ turned ‘good guy’
who gets his life back on track to help and inspire others. His riveting
story has it all; the millions he made from robberies, prison torture,
the New York mafia, and much more. A blockbuster movie waiting to
happen, Gangster Redemption takes readers on a white-knuckle,
roller-coaster ride to hell and back!

Lawton understands
first-hand the fine line between making good and bad choices; he spent
six years in the Coast Guard before making bad choices that led to
associations with organized crime. In prison he saw inmates stabbed and
friends die. He saw young men raped and pimped out as prostitutes for
other inmates. He studied to become a paralegal while in prison and
acted as a gang mediator. Larry fought prison abuses and for doing so,
spent three years in the “hole” being tortured by guards – and somehow
kept his sanity by helping other inmates.

After his release in
2007, Larry developed the Reality Check Program as a way to instill hope
and inspire kids to stay out of prison – a program so successful it’s
being used by the courts, law enforcement, the federal government, and
parents all over the country. A leader in the field, Larry’s program
reinforces that when people make good choices their life can change. An
independent quantitative analysis was done showing the Reality Check
Program to have one of the highest success rates in the nation. 90% of
the teens did not get re-arrested, 70% had better attitudes, 43% had
better school grades and 31% had better school attendance.

Currently
working on a new TV show called Lawton’s Law to advance this program,
Larry is realizing major triumphs in turning kids’ lives around. They
recognize that Larry ‘walks the talk’ and when he shares how prison cost
him lost time, family, friends and his freedom – they listen and they
learn that a life of crime is no life at all.

Larry Lawton has
appeared on TV and radio, and been featured in numerous newspaper
articles. His recent TV appearances include The Trisha Show on NBC, The
Daily Buzz, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Huckabee on FOX, and many
others. Larry’s inimitable style connects easily with people and he
unquestionably brings the most entertaining, motivating and
inspirational stories to audiences around the country.

Check Program and its remarkable successes, please visit: www.lawton911.com.
