‘Her’ Draws Attention To A Disorder That Disrupts The Lives Of Many Teens And Robs Them Of Their Self-Identity

In ‘Her,’ Felicia Johnson takes us into the mind of a girl suffering with borderline personality disorder, and deftly portrays her hopes and struggles as she desperately tries to understand it.

Tucker, GA – While mental health issues are more freely discussed these days, it’s still difficult to approach someone who might have a problem. But ignoring it is not an option. With courage and great hope, Felicia Johnson deftly portrays the struggles of a girl with borderline personality disorder in Her (8th Street Publishing).

“Her takes readers into the mind of someone who is suffering so they can get a first person view of a painful mental disorder,” says Johnson. “The story is an example of how, if we try to push the past away, we are either doomed to repeat it or let it haunt us to our graves.”

At first glance, Kristen Elliott is a normal seventeen-year-old who loves her family and friends and strives for their approval. But Kristen knows something is wrong with her. In her pain and isolation, she finds fleeting solace in self-injury, and the company of Mr. Sharp, her imaginary friend who feeds her feelings of self-loathing.
After a failed suicide attempt, Kristen is placed in a mental hospital and diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). There, she discovers the circumstances that brought her to this breaking point, struggles to understand her mental illness, and fights to be a survivor against her own worst enemy: her self-blame.

Kristen’s tale of endurance illustrates the complex nature of the illness known as borderline personality disorder. Readers – including those suffering from BPD and their friends and family – can glean insight into the illness from this powerful and compelling story.

“The story is inspired by my life of survival and my childhood best friend, Holly, who suffered from BPD,” Johnson says. “Holly lost her battle with depression and BPD when she was 15 years old and took her own life. Her also illuminates the harsh reality of child abuse in the home and the long term psychological effects it has on everyone involved.”

Johnson is an author, child abuse survivor, and mental health advocate. She works in Atlanta with the Highlands Institute and volunteers with Youth Villages Inner Harbour and Personality Disorder Awareness Network. Johnson was nominated for the Gutsy Gals Inspire Me Award of 2014 and Her has been nominated for Georgia Writer’s Association Author of The Year Award. She loves ice cream and seeing her little sister smile.

Brace For Impact: “Miracle on the Hudson” Survivors Share Their Stories of Near Death and Hope for New Life

What Passengers of Flight 1549 Want Others to Know About Second Chances

Deerfield Beach, FL – On January 15, 2009, the world was mesmerized by “the miracle on the Hudson.” Against all odds, Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed a plane plunging toward disaster on the river. More amazingly, all 150 passengers
survived—and, for the most part, with nothing worse (physically) than a few bruises
and soggy clothes. At the time, many of us tried to imagine how we would have
those three chilling words—“Brace for impact”—and then, amazingly, been spared from certain death?

A year later, it’s time for a different, perhaps more meaningful story. What happened to these extremely fortunate passengers when they went home? What was it like to return to their families, their jobs, their neighborhoods—everything familiar, but somehow changed? How did they celebrate coming back from the brink of near-death trauma? How did their loved ones respond to the living proof of a miracle? What has been the real impact they braced for, not of the disaster and death they expected, but of the gift of a “new” life?

Intrigued by these and other questions, authors Dorothy Firman and Kevin Quirk set out to find answers—by asking the survivors themselves. The result is an inspiring collection of first-person accounts: Brace For Impact: “Miracle on the Hudson” Survivors Share Their Stories of Near Death and Hope for New Life (HCI Books). Along with the personal stories of 25 men and women profoundly affected by Flight 1549—survivors and first-responders—this volume offers lessons about faith, gratitude, wisdom, healing, love, and transformation for everyone in today’s world of upheaval and challenges.
Readers will hear from parents who believed they would never see their teenagers, toddlers, or a child on the way; an ex-Marine officer, a swimming pool serviceman, a nurse, a TV executive, and a boat pilot; survivors who have publicly spoken about their experiences at churches, schools, businesses, and organizations as large as the American Red Cross, as well as those who have remained private. Through their heartfelt, stirring words, their courageous admissions of fear, their humor and their hope, the contributors reinforce the importance of family, knowing what really matters, and discovering our purpose. Throughout and above all, Brace For Impact stands as a testament to how something good—even something wonderful—can emerge out of crisis and tragedy. And that’s a timely, welcome lesson to inspire and comfort everyone.

“Fail Safe collides with Norman Rockwell in this fitfully entertaining novel about an America ripped apart at its seams.”—Kirkus Reviews, on One Year After

Black Mountain, NC – Fans of John Matherson and his fierce brand of patriotism eagerly await a major release from Forge Books and New York Times bestselling author William R. Forstchen. The Final Day, third in the series, is scheduled for release in early January 2017.

Months before publication, Forstchen’s One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. Film rights to that novel have already been optioned by Warner Bros. The riveting story of our nation’s struggle to rebuild itself after an electromagnetic pulse plunges the country into darkness, starvation, and death was followed closely by the acclaimed One Year After, continuing the Matherson saga.

The Final Day picks up after John Matherson and his community defeat the designs of the alleged federal government. Now they have returned their attention to restoring the technologies and social order existing prior to the EMP attack. When the government announces that it is ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico, General Bob Scales is sent to confront Matheson. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what’s left of the U.S. Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states.

General Scales is John’s former commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days. Where do his loyalties fall? Might he be the crucial turning point in the quest for an America that is again united? When news breaks that members of the federal government knew an EMP attack was coming long before it hit, the government might get exactly what it fears: revolution.

William R. Forstchen is the New York Times bestselling author of One Second After. He holds a Ph.D. in history from Purdue University, with specializations in military history and the history of technology. Forstchen is currently a faculty fellow and professor of history at Montreat College, near Asheville, North Carolina.

The Remnant – When A Tattered Page From An Outlawed Bible Inspires Hope For A New Beginning

Los Angeles, CA ―The year is 2069; the Apocalypse came and went – but when Jesus didn’t show up, many survivors are left fearful and wondering…

The cataclysmic war left a totalitarian government ruling the world and they’ve outlawed the Bible and banned all forms of religion, banishing any who persist in practicing religion to work camps across the globe. In this riveting, action-packed plot, devout Christians are forced into hiding with only a piece of a ripped-out page from the Bible, showing a scrap of the Sermon on the Mount, as their beacon of hope.

Both inspiring and satirical, The Remnant follows the long and dangerous journey of Grant Cochrin, an escapee of a work camp, and his family as they journey in search of an authentic Christian community in the lawless wilderness of North America. Having so far encountered nothing but strange religious communities along the way, they are about to start their own community when they are ambushed by human traffickers.

When World Federation security forces intervene at the last minute, the Cochrins expect imprisonment but instead come face-to-face with an unthinkable choice. As even more bizarre events unfold in this mystifying and challenging world of spiritual and physical dysfunction, there nevertheless remains a very real sense of hope.

As Wolverton masterfully entertains readers, his thought-provoking story also encourages them to freely question religious institutions and organizations. Unlike any other book on the shelves about Christianity in a dystopian future, The Remnant inspires, makes us laugh, and scares us … but all the while reinforces the belief that Jesus is with us no matter how dysfunctional we are.

Monte Wolverton is an award-winning author, syndicated editorial cartoonist and an associate editor of CWR magazine. He is an ordained minister and holds a MA from Goddard College in Vermont. He lives in southwest Washington State with his wife, Kaye.

• Should you stay or should you go?
• If you stay, how do you turn a relationship around?
• Or, if it’s time to go, how do you make it right for the kids?

How A Vision Became A Reality That Transformed The Lives Of Thousands On Dialysis

Houston, TX – An entrepreneur, patient advocate and author, Cindy Barclay has become one of Houston’s most respected and successful women in business. Many years ago, Cindy had an epiphany as she lay immobile in a hospital bed following an automobile accident. A registered nurse for 20 years, Cindy believed there was a better way to utilize her vast experience in critical and intensive care, taking care of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. An empathetic person, she knew first-hand how trips to a clinic or hospital for dialysis treatments literally took over a patient’s life, and she knew there had to be a way to bring the treatment to the patient. Eventually, her vision materialized into Quality Dialysis, Inc. ― the first organization in Texas to offer Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis in the comfort of a patient’s home!

Cindy was determined to bring about awareness and help educate many of the 26 million adults diagnosed with renal failure in the U.S, and provide a cost-effective alternative to the traditional out-patient dialysis centers. Today, Quality Dialysis has grown to 70+ employees and patients are quick to tout the benefits to be gained from in-home dialysis treatments. In fact, one patient’s testimony says it all: “One day a representative came to my hospital room to see if I was a candidate for the (QD) staff-assisted home dialysis program. At that time I did not know that she was the owner. She made me feel like we had known each other for years… It has been that way ever since. The employees make me feel better each and every time they visit my home. Every one of them is very professional, but at the same time, very caring. If you have a problem they have a solution or they will find someone who has the solution for you…”

Based in Stafford, Texas, Quality Dialysis focuses on the physical, physiological and socio-cultural needs of the patient – all primary factors in coping with the disease process. Treatment is administered by a licensed nurse, not a dialysis technician, and under the supervision of a nephrologist. As with Hemodialysis, the same holds true for Peritoneal Dialysis, a life-sustaining procedure that involves the introduction and drainage of a special fluid into the abdominal cavity to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. A nurse takes each patient through a program; 4-5 days training for Hemodialysis, and roughly 6-12 weeks training for Peritoneal Dialysis, until the patient knows how to perform these procedures themselves.

Says Cindy Barclay: “Quality Dialysis’s commitment to provide exceptional home-based dialysis services has made a difference in the lives of those coping with chronic kidney disease and undergoing dialysis.”
